{"id":639,"date":"2013-10-25T16:23:05","date_gmt":"2013-10-25T16:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farrarhome.org\/home\/?p=639"},"modified":"2013-10-25T16:23:33","modified_gmt":"2013-10-25T16:23:33","slug":"the-amazing-power-of-positive-thinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farrarhome.org\/home\/?p=639","title":{"rendered":"The Amazing Power of Positive Thinking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you a person whose glass is half empty or half full?\u00a0 Are you optimistic or pessimistic?\u00a0 Believe it or not, these are very important questions to ask yourself.\u00a0 If you are one who struggles with negative thoughts and negative self talk, your overall health may be at risk.<\/p>\n<p>Negative emotions and feelings are known to generate harmful toxins throughout the body. Anger, envy, jealousy and fear prompt the endocrine system to create poisons in the blood.\u00a0 Anxiety, depression and doubt can also produce dangerous substances which have a detrimental effect on a person\u2019s mental and physical condition.\u00a0 \u00a0Lengthy negative emotions are even more dangerous for your health than active, sudden negative feelings.\u00a0 It is a fact that negative emotions can cause anxiety and will shorten a person\u2019s life. \u00a0Those who anger easily and are under constant stress are often people who develop heart disease and other illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>When people think that something unpleasant is going to happen to them, it is more likely to happen because it is reflected in their unconscious.\u00a0 This is called \u201ca self-fulfilling prophecy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Amazingly, about 70% of all illnesses are psychosomatic, or caused by mental stress.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, positive thinking and an optimistic attitude helps to reduce stress and consequently, improves your health and well-being.\u00a0 Positive thinking people have fewer heart attacks and in general, less illness.\u00a0 So, if you are a negative thinker with a pessimistic attitude, is there any hope for you?\u00a0 Yes!<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that you can learn positive thinking skills.\u00a0 This does not mean you live an unrealistic life and ignore life\u2019s less pleasant situations.\u00a0 Positive thinking means you approach the unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way.\u00a0 You need to think the best is going to happen, not the worst.\u00a0 For some, this is easier said than done.\u00a0 But really, what do you have to lose.\u00a0 God forbid, you think the best will happen and you are wrong.\u00a0 You have wasted all that time feeling positive about something.\u00a0 How can that hurt you?<\/p>\n<p>While doing some research on this topic, I found the Mayo Clinic promotes the idea of positive self-talk.\u00a0 Throughout the day a person has an endless stream of unspoken thoughts running through their head.\u00a0 These thoughts can be negative or positive.\u00a0 How can you turn a negative thought into a positive one?\u00a0 Just do it!\u00a0 There is no situation that is all negative.\u00a0 You have to find the positive and focus on that aspect and try to diminish the negative.\u00a0\u00a0 This may not be easy for many, but it is worth it.\u00a0 I have always heard, \u201cthere is a silver lining in every dark cloud\u201d and it is true.<\/p>\n<p>Some tips to overcome negative thoughts include meditation and yoga. \u00a0Smile, surround yourself with positive people, change the tone of your thoughts from negative to positive, don\u2019t play the victim, help someone. \u00a0Remember that no one is perfect and allow yourself to move forward. \u00a0Sing, list five things you are grateful for and read positive quotes. What do you have to lose?\u00a0 Be good to yourself and give this a try.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers continue to investigate the health effects of positive thinking and optimism.\u00a0 They feel at this time the benefits include:<\/p>\n<p>-Increased life span<\/p>\n<p>-Lower rates of depression<\/p>\n<p>-Lower levels of distress<\/p>\n<p>-Greater resistance to the common cold<\/p>\n<p>-Better psychological and physical well-being<\/p>\n<p>-Reduced risk of death from heart disease<\/p>\n<p>-Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress<\/p>\n<p>Over the years at the Farrar Home, I have found that residents and staff with positive outlooks on life do much better in all areas.\u00a0 It can be challenging to find the good in a difficult situation, but it is there.\u00a0 We should all try to do this not only for ourselves, but to help others focus the wonderful things in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Living life to the best of our abilities and taking good care of ourselves and other people will help to make the world a better place for everyone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you a person whose glass is half empty or half full?\u00a0 Are you optimistic or pessimistic?\u00a0 Believe it or not, these are very important questions to ask yourself.\u00a0 If you are one who struggles with negative thoughts and negative self talk, your overall health may be at risk.
